Transfer Rumours – Chelsea to finalize deal for new striker in 24 hours

Updated: January 26, 2016

The Football Insider reports that Chelsea are set to secure the signature of Corinthians forward Alexandre Pato within the next 24 hours. The link to Pato has gone hot and cold plenty of times in the last seven to eight days, but this time it is believed that the move has finally been given the green light by interim boss Guus Hiddink.

The report goes on to say that a medical has been booked for Pato and that the pending work permit would be a mere formality before the Brazilian’s signing is announced.

A few days ago, reports emerged that Hiddink wasn’t particularly keen on bringing in the former AC Milan frontman to reinforce Chelsea’s frontline but, with his apparent permission, there doesn’t seem to be a lot stopping Pato from being unveiled as a Chelsea player in the coming week.

When the links first emerged, Corinthians were demanding a permanent deal with Chelsea likely forking out £10 million for the former AC Milan striker, but negotiations have led to the stage that Chelsea are now looking at a six-month loan with an option to take him onboard permanently.

Pato, nicknamed ‘The Duck’, was a phenomenon when he burst onto the scene in the Club World Cup against Barcelona for Internacional and it led to a scurry of clubs looking for his signature. Milan won that footrace, and he made quite a name for himself in the initial phase of his six year stint at AC Milan before injuries seemingly crippled him.

Having scored 63 goals in his six seasons at Milan, he returned to Brazil. Despite facing trouble bedding in initially, falling out with the Corinthians fans and board, Pato has impressed in the last two seasons while out on loan at Sao Paulo.

While his goal returns over the last two seasons have been impressive, a cause for concern would be the fact that he has almost exclusively played as a left winger. He also admitted that he lacked the build to play as a striker anymore. With that in mind, does it really make sense for Chelsea to bring Pato in?

Chelsea have been struggling for depth at center forward, and are often criticized for being overly reliant on Diego Costa who has repeatedly been plagued by fitness issues. Loic Remy is rumored to be on the lookout for a move in search of regular playing time ahead of the Euros. Summer signing Radamel Falcao has spent most of the time on the injury table and not much is expected of him in the remainder of the season.

If Remy were to leave, as some reports have claimed is possible, Pato might be seen on the Chelsea bench as early as the next round of fixtures.
