Hiddink sets sight on three targets

Guus Hiddink claimed that while Chelsea have been left chasing a top four place, with title retention chances all but over after an unprecedented slump in the first half of the season, chances are not yet nil in the Champions League and the FA Cup.

Chelsea, defending champions going into the season, failed to produce any semblance of winning football and saw the season crumble in front of their eyes and fan-favorite manager Jose Mourinho also getting the axe.

Now the Blues find themselves eleven points off the fourth spot, that would give them a way into next season’s Champions League. That mathematical possibility has Hiddink excited, as he believes the squad can still get it’s act together and finish in the top four.

That said, he also added that the Champions League and the FA Cup were also targets the Blues were chasing.

“Generally, I set targets: the target is, because mathematically it’s possible, to get in fourth position. To do that we have to be exclusively good. If the target is impossible, don’t set it, but I did put that to them.

Then the Champions League; and then the FA Cup. There are three targets still to go for. On top of that, or as a foundation of that, the players must show now what they’re capable of.”

Chelsea face Paris St Germain over two legs in the knockout phase of the Champions League, while Scunthorpe are due to visit the Bridge for the third round of the FA Cup in the new year.

If the players are rightly motivated, I think we have a capable squad to take us there.
